Year 1/2 Squirrels

Squirrels Autumn 2026 Newsletter

I am so pleased to welcome the children back to school after their Summer break. Below are some details about what the children will be learning about this term.

In Geography we will be learning about human and physical features and how they help us understand a place. We will then compare London and Nairobi, exploring the similarities and differences between these two cities. In History we will be learning about the Great Fire of London. We will find out how the fire started, how it spread through the city and the changes that were made afterwards.

In Science we will begin by exploring Living Things and Their Habitats, learning about different habitats, food chains and how living things depend on their environment. Later, we will move on to Animals Including Humans, where children will learn about healthy lifestyles, nutrition and how humans and animals grow and change throughout their lives.

In English we will be exploring a range of fiction texts to develop reading, writing and storytelling skills. Year 1 children will focus on sequencing familiar stories and learning about labels and captions in non-fiction texts. Year 2 children will create character descriptions and use adjectives and conjunctions to make their writing more detailed and engaging.

In Maths Year 1 children will focus on counting, reading and writing numbers to 10, as well as addition and subtraction within 10. They will also learn about 2D and 3D shapes. Year 2 children will develop their understanding of numbers to 100, explore finding 10 more and 10 less, practise adding and subtracting tens, and begin learning about multiplication and division.

In PE this term, we will be developing balance, agility and coordination by focusing on the fundamental skills of running, hopping, jumping and changing direction. We will also explore simple movement patterns through dance sequences and look at teambuilding and fitness work. Please could children have a named PE kit in school at all times.

Reading - Please read regularly with your child at home. Your comments in their reading diary are also greatly appreciated. We will continue with Rainbow Readers. Certificates will be given out in assembly to children who read 5 times a week at home. If you read with your child 5 times a week for 5 weeks and record this in their reading diary, they can choose a book to keep.

Spellings (Year 2) - Spellings will begin soon and will be sent home each Monday and will be tested the following Monday in school. Please support your child by practising spelling these words at home.

Healthy/appropriate snacks can be sent from home for break times but fruit is provided at school. Children should bring a drink to school (preferably water) each day in a named water bottle. Bookbags and reading books are needed in school each day. Please can you check these daily for any letters/important information.
