PE and Sports
Physical Education
At St Martin’s, we believe that all young people should be able to live healthy and active lives. A positive experience of sport and physical activity at a young age can build a lifetime habit of participation. Physical activity has numerous benefits for children and young people's physical health and mental well-being. Physically active children are happier, more resilient and more trusting of their peers.
We strongly believe that success breeds motivation. Therefore, we focus on enabling all pupils to access the skill or game. Every child has a minimum of two PE sessions per week. Teachers follow the scheme ‘Power of PE’ to provide well-structured and skill lead PE lessons.
Individual and team activities are planned to allow children to continue these physical activities outside school and develop life-long habits. Activities are fully inclusive and provide opportunities for everyone to achieve regardless of skill level.
Swimming
Children in Key Stage 2 have a block of swimming lessons each year. Swimming skills are developed through structured lessons that are adapted to every ability. Life-saving skills are taught once children are confident swimming 25m.
Swimming is a vital life skill that children need, it is strongly advised that the children participate in swimming outside of school too to ensure confidence. Should you be interested in booking lessons or taking your child swimming please see the Halo website for more information, please find a link here.
Fixtures and events
The children at St Martin’s are keen footballers and over the years we have had some fantastic skilful teams. We try to take part in as many Hereford FA tournaments as possible and have fixtures with other schools. We are lucky that within our Academy we have multiple schools that we can arrange matches with for all sports and also host events such as tournaments. Even our staff have enjoyed representing our school in tournaments.

Intent We study PE to develop the physical, social and emotional well-being of our students. At St Martins we aim to provide an engaging and challenging curriculum that allows (all) students to achieve beyond their expectations. To offer excellent opportunities to develop a healthy life-long love of physical activity and to develop a first class teaching and learning environment where both staff and students enjoy working hard together to achieve success. We want all students to feel they belong as part of a team, believe in their healthy potential and become as physically, socially and emotionally well as they can be. We do this by developing the attitudes, skills and knowledge required to be a leader and provide memorable experiences throughout a student’s journey within Physical Education. Students will experience a variety of opportunities and experiences that support this vision, challenging them both inside and outside the classroom allowing them to excel in a broad range of physical activities and engage in competitive sports and activities. School teams will enjoy both friendly and competitive fixtures in a range of sports against other local schools. They will focus on improving their fitness, health and well-being through knowledge and application. Students will develop physical, technical and tactical sporting skills; enhanced by an embedded focus on mental skills such as resilience, determination and confidence. We aim to ensure all students leave the school possessing the skills, motivation and knowledge to enjoy a lifelong engagement with sport and physical activity. We trust that our broad and innovative PE curriculum will allow students to develop their love of movement and sport well beyond their time with us. As Swimming is an important life skill, we aspire for all children to leave primary school being able to swim at least 25 metres. |
Implementation At St Martins we teach lessons so that: - Children participate in high-quality P:E lessons twice a week covering two different sports/skills per term. - Children receive P:E lessons that are delivered by professional paid coaches for two half terms a year. - Teachers use, the power of P: E planning and resources to ensure lessons across years show progression. - Classes follow the PE overview to ensure pupils participate in a variety of sports. - Children have the opportunity for physical activity during morning and lunchtime breaks on two well-equipped school yards, stocked with resources. Staff are on duty to co-ordinate a range of active playground games. - Children participate in a variety of competitive sports through interschool and inter-house competitions - Children attend swimming lessons. - We provide children with opportunities to participate in extra-curricular activities that are inclusive, enjoyable and increase children’s physical activity. SEND sports clubs are offered to both KS1 and KS2 pupils. - The children will be provided the opportunity to participate in fixtures and sporting events within the local community and against local schools both competitively and friendly. - Annually, the school celebrates ‘Healthy Living Week’ to educate and promote a healthy lifestyle and physical activity. The school also celebrates other sporting activities across the year such as national fitness day and sport relief. - Children engage in different workshops, activities and sports, and the week culminates with our whole-school Sports day. |
Impact At St Martins School, we ensure that our PE curriculum is progressive and allows children to develop fundamental skills and apply them to a variety of sports and activities. All children are provided with the skills and given opportunities to demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best. P.E is taught as a basis for lifelong learning, where the children have access to a wide range of activities in the belief that if taught well and the children are allowed to succeed, then they will continue to have a physically active life. Our pupils are physically active and this has positive implications on their learning in the classroom. Children understand how to lead a healthy lifestyle and understand the importance of exercise. We hope children enjoy PE and develop a love of sport, and physical activity, that they pursue outside of school and in future life outside of primary school. All pupils understand the values and importance of fair play and being a good sportsperson. Year 6 pupils leave school with the skills to self-rescue in the water and swim 25 metres competently. The use of assessment, questionnaires and surveys (pupils and staff) and by talking to children the quality of lessons and confidence in the teaching of PE improves and as a result the enjoyment and positive outcomes increases. |
