Welcome to Year 2
Hello and welcome to Year 2 class page.
Mrs Price, Mrs Davies and Mrs Rattenbury are our teachers and we have Mrs James and Mrs Smart working with us.
We would like to welcome your children back after the Christmas break and to wish you all a Happy New Year. This newsletter is to let you know what your child will be learning about this term. Please continue to support your child by reading regularly with them, learning the 2x, 5x and 10x tables and telling the time on a clock face.
In English we will write for different purposes.
We will explore a variety of fantasy stories and traditional tales and write our own.
We will write interesting opening sentences to engage our reader.
We will add suffixes to words to spell them correctly such as ‘ment’, ‘ness’, ‘ful’ and ‘less’.
We will know and spell comparatives and superlatives such as bigger and biggest.
We will begin to join our handwriting in daily handwriting and extended handwriting
Throughout the year we will use the letters and sounds scheme to teach the children phonics and the Oxford Reading Tree is the main scheme for reading.
In maths we will be reading and writing numbers to at least 100 in numerals and words.
We will be recognising and using symbols for pounds (£) and pence (p) and using addition and subtraction with money.
We will add and subtract two 2 digit numbers by adding the tens and then adding the ones.
We will use mathematical language to describe position, direction and movement including half and quarter turns.
We will learn to tell the time to the hour, half hour, quarter of an hour and the nearest five minutes.
What else are we studying this term?
During Spring term we are covering a wide range of topics including Materials and Healthy Eating in Science. In Geography we will be looking at weather patterns in the United Kingdom. In History we will study Florence Nightingale. In R.E. we will learn Judaism and special festivals celebrated by Jewish people.
We have been looking at dragon stories like George and the Dragon by Chris Wormell and The Dragon Machine by Helen Ward.
We were astonished to arrive at school one morning to find that dragons had invaded our classrooms. They knocked over furniture and burnt books with their fiery breath. We had to be detectives to investigate the damage and report on what they had done.
Hopefully they have responded to our commands to leave and will not return.
Thank you for taking the time to read this page. We are looking
forward to an interesting and productive term.
